*Verse by Verse Commentary from Adam Clark, Matthew Henry, Charles Spurgeon and John Gill.
*Matthew 7:24–27/Luke 6:47–49
L6:46 And why call ye Me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not practice what I tell you?Q: Why do we call Him Lord, Lord, in prayer if we do not obey His commands?
M7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of Mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
So everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, will be like a wise man [a far-sighted, practical, and sensible man] who built his house on the rock.
I will liken him to a wise man, which built his house upon a rock -Luke says, "he is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation a rock".
Every believer is a builder; the house he builds, to which he digs deep, till he comes to a rock, to a good foundation; he searches diligently into the Scriptures of truth;
M7:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
And the rain fell, and the floods and torrents came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
And the rain descended - floods came - winds blew - There are three general kinds of trials to which the followers of God are exposed; and to which, some think, our Lord alludes here:
First, those of temporal afflictions, coming in the course of Divine Providence: these may be likened to the torrents of rain.
Secondly, those which come from the passions of men, and which may be likened to the impetuous rivers.
Thirdly, those which come from Satan and his angels, and which, like tempestuous whirlwinds, threaten to carry every thing before them.
He alone, whose soul is built on the Rock of ages, stands all these shocks; and not only stands in, but profits by them.
Even if you live to the world,
or live unto Satan,
you will not live without trial.
M7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of Mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
And everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not do them, will be like a foolish (stupid) man who built his house on the sand.
And every one that heareth - and doeth them not - Q: Was there ever a stricter system of morality delivered by God to man, than in this sermon?
He who reads or hears it, and does not look to God to conform his soul and life to it, and notwithstanding is hoping to enter into the kingdom of heaven, is like the fool who built his house on the sand. When the rain, the rivers, and the winds come, his building must fall, and his soul be crushed into the nethermost pit by its ruins.
M7:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
And the rain fell, and the floods and torrents came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great and complete was its fall.
M7:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
And the rain fell, and the floods and torrents came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great and complete was its fall.
Just when the tenant most needed shelter, it fell. He did not need it so much till the floods came, and the winds blew; but now, when he would fain have crouched down beneath his roof-tree, and have been at peace from the howling hurricane, then “it fell.”
L6:49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
But the one who has [merely] heard and has not practiced [what I say], is like a [foolish] man who built a house on the ground without any foundation, and the torrent burst against it; and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.

The ruin of that house was great - Without a holy heart and a holy life, all is ruinous in the hour of temptation, and in the day of wrath.
The mere profession is nothing.
No matter how lofty and splendid the edifice built on the sand, when the storm comes it is doomed.
Of course, it is a good deal easier
to make anything
out of sand than out of rock, which calls for patient,
long-continued toil.
The reason so few find the way that leads to heaven and safety is that they do not heed the words of Christ. They may hear them, but this does not avail if, after hearing,
they still follow in their own course
--of unbelief
--and sinful indulgences,
and then when they are not blessed, complain.
--Let us make the Scriptures our rule of life.
--Let us search them diligently and carry out in the daily life the principles that they teach.
--This is the only genuine higher education possible for us to obtain."
